Use of Oil Overlay in the Culture of Embryos

Covering small volumes of culture media (50 to 100ml) with oil is a commonly used technique for culturing human gametes and embryos. It was first used for culture of embryos by Gwatkin (1963) and then further described by Brinster (1963); however, other culture methods using oil overlay were explored during the early days of embryo culture (Brinster, 1968).
